Gift of Love

A program to provide for needy individuals and families at Christmas time.

Gift of Love 2021

We changed the format of the program last year due to safety concerns related to COVID and will keep those same changes in place this year.  It was a huge success last year with all of the recipient families very grateful for your donations.

To eliminate the need for social gatherings/interaction, there will be no presents this year. Rather than have the sponsors buy presents and food, we are asking the sponsor families to simply donate the equivalent amount of money. With that money, we will then buy gift cards for selected department and food stores and then distribute gift cards to the needy families. We understand that this method may feel a little less personal than in past years, but we know that the families need for financial help is just as great this year as ever.

By eliminating the need for family selection, shopping for gifts, and distribution, we can ensure the safety of everyone involved. This is a great program and we don’t want to put anyone at risk while doing a good deed.  We hope you can help us keep this program alive and provide help and joy to the many families in need.

Sponsoring a Family

We expect St. Edna, St. James, Little City, will have the usual total of around 100 needy families with sizes ranging from 1 to 10. If you sponsored a family in the past, please consider sponsoring a family of the same size this year. If you are new to the program, feel certain that 100% of your donation goes toward buying gifts and food to help needy families have a joyful Christmas.  Plus this year we are able to purchase the gift cards through St. Edna which will also help our parish.

You can make your donation in one of two ways:

Program Overview

Gift of Love is a program with a long tradition of making the Christmas season a lot brighter for needy individuals and families from the St. Edna area, our sharing parish St. James in Chicago, residents of Little City in Palatine, and Faith Community Homes. In the last 3 years alone, we have helped over 1,130 people in 323 families.

This is a wonderful opportunity for St. Edna parishioners to sponsor a family and share with those who have little in the way of material goods.

Parishioners review the numerous individual wish lists in November and then select a family to sponsor.  They take the list and go shopping for the family, wrap and address the gifts, and also include additional food items and gift cards.  All presents are dropped off at St. Edna one morning about a month later and subsequently distributed directly to the families.

There are a lot of ways to help in this program.  Selecting a family to buy gifts for, donating cash or gift cards, volunteering to help with the many jobs during family selection days, present drop-off, present pick-up, the party with Santa, food, and activities, or joining the GOL Committee to help with numerous other duties needing volunteers.

We are blessed with people who continue to donate printing time and costs, packing boxes, warm scarves and hats, and even a moving truck and crew to transport the items to St. James on Wabash Ave.  The St. Edna maintenance crew, Gail, and the office staff are a great help.

Below are just a few of the cards from recipient families to show you how deeply you can touch people’s lives with your generosity.
