Gift of Love

A program to provide for needy individuals and families at Christmas time.

Gift of Love 2020 - THANK-YOU!

On December 5, with the help of a small group of volunteers, we distributed gift cards to 38 St. Edna needy families, totaling over 120 family members. A couple days later we delivered gift cards to St. James on Wabash who will distribute them to over 60 families totaling over 250 people. St. James also received many gift cards for several local fast-food restaurants that they will give to the homeless who come to them on Christmas Day. Little City received gift cards to help more than a dozen of their residents. Additionally, cards were donated to the St. Edna food pantry to help provide food for the needy this season.

COVID made us change the format of the program this year, but it certainly didn’t change the love and care that the St. Edna parish has always demonstrated for giving to those families who are less fortunate. The money donated by you will help well over 400 people have a much brighter Christmas. We couldn’t see the smiles on their faces through the masks everyone was wearing, or have them write their usual thank you notes, but their words to you were THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. This is a great program and once again, you all have made it a huge success.

Thank you,
Genelle & Don Quant

Gift of Love 2020 - Some Changes ...

In spite of the situation this year with COVID-19, we are still running our Gift of Love program.  However, this year we need to make some changes to ensure the safety of the receiving families, the sponsors, and the volunteers.

To eliminate the need for social gatherings/interaction, there will be no presents this year. Rather than have the sponsors buy presents and food, we are asking the sponsor families to simply donate the equivalent amount of money. With that money, we will then buy gift cards for selected department and food stores and then distribute gift cards to the needy families. We understand that this method may feel a little less personal than in past years, but we know that the families need for financial help is just as great this year as ever.

By eliminating the need for family selection, shopping for gifts, and distribution, we can ensure the safety of everyone involved. This is a great program and we don’t want to put anyone at risk while doing a good deed.

With so many things changing this year, we hope you can help us keep this program alive and provide help and joy to the many families in need.

Sponsoring a Family

We expect St. Edna, St. James, Little City, and Faith Community Homes will have the usual total of around 100 needy families with sizes ranging from 1 to 10. If you sponsored a family in the past, please consider sponsoring a family of the same size this year. If you are new to the program, feel certain that 100% of your donation goes toward buying gifts and food to help needy families have a joyful Christmas.

Program Overview

Gift of Love is a program with a long tradition of making the Christmas season a lot brighter for needy individuals and families from the St. Edna area, our sharing parish St. James in Chicago, residents of Little City in Palatine, and Faith Community Homes. In the last 3 years alone, we have helped over 1,130 people in 323 families.

This is a wonderful opportunity for St. Edna parishioners to sponsor a family and share with those who have little in the way of material goods.

Below are just a few of the cards from recipient families to show you how deeply you can touch people’s lives with your generosity.
