Overview

Our Extraordinary Ministers of Communion or EM's help the gathered community become closer to Christ and each other by assisting with the distribution of the Body and Precious Blood of Christ at weekend and weekday liturgies or at weekday Communion Services.

Formation and Training

Training for this ministry consists of attending an Archdiocese training session at St. Edna, and attending a training/practice session specifically about St. Edna. EM's become certified by the Archdiocese for a three year period, which may be renewed as necessary. In addition, an annual Evening of Renewal is provided for all liturgical ministers to reflect on their role as a minister and a member of the St. Edna's Catholic community.

Expectations

The following summarizes the expectations, duties, and responsibilities of our Extraordinary Ministers of Communion:

Those interested in becoming an EM are welcome to join this ministry at any time during the year after attending training.
EM's are typically scheduled to serve at one or two weekend liturgies each month, through our on-line scheduling program, Ministry Scheduler Pro.
EM's are expected to arrive and check in at church at least 20 minutes prior to the beginning of their assigned liturgy.
They are to approach the altar at the designated time during liturgy and assist with the distribution of Holy Communion.
Ministers should exhibit a reverence for the Eucharist by their manner and attire.
Occasionally, they will assist the Sacristan with cleaning of the Communion vessels following the liturgy.
When attending non-scheduled liturgies, EM's are encouraged to inquire with the assigned Sacristan whether additional assistance is needed.
