We are happy to announce that we will have the first ever Simbang Gabi Mass, in Tagalog,
at St. Edna on December 20, 2024, at 6pm.
A reception will follow at the Parish Center.
Please join us for a traditional Filipino Mass and Tagalog hymns.
What is Simbang Gabi?
Simbang Gabi is a nine-day series of dawn Masses and prayers that is a central part of Filipino Christmas traditions. It is a devotional practice that takes place in the early mornings in the lead up to Christmas. The name translates to "Night Mass" in Tagalog.
Simbang Gabi begins on December 16 and ends on December 24. Simbang Gabi originated in New Spain and the Philippine archipelago in the 16th century. It was originally intended as a way for farmers to pray for a good harvest before they started working in the fields. The Masses are held at various times, from as early as 3 AM to 5 AM.
It symbolizes a time to prepare spiritually for Christmas and to commemorate the birth of Jesus Christ. It is also a way to ask the Lord for blessings.
Filipinos celebrate Simbang Gabi with Masses, prayers, and festive gatherings. After the Mass, people often eat traditional delicacies like bibingka, puto, suman sa pasko, and suman sa ibos.
The Filipino immigrants have proudly introduced this beautiful tradition to the Church in the United States. Since winter weather in most parts of the country makes it impractical to hold the Mass celebrations at dawn, local parishes have adopted the practice and celebrate Simbang Gabi in the evenings.
We need to know how many will be attending Mass and the meal to follow, so we can plan effectively for your evening.
We are also in need of volunteer to help & donate supplies. Any monetary donations can be cash or check (payable to St. Edna) and they can drop it at the office or during the event.
